WFC Almost Upon US! Woman

09.12.01 USA: Within days the Women’s World Floorball Championships with commence in Västerås, Sweden. The US Women’s team tied the Swedish team Onyx 3-3 in a friendly game earlier this week. We have taken time for a Q & A with Jenna Bluhm.

What made you start playing floorball?
I went to Sweden for a bandy tournament and ended up bringing home a
floorball stick after seeing them at a sporting goods store. I've played both hockey and
bandy for years and it seemed like a good sport to complement the other two. Luckily
there is a group that plays floorball in my hometown so I have people to play with.

Why do you still play?
It's such a fast paced game and great exercise. It can be played year-round and
is just a lot of fun!

What do you think needs to happen for floorball to grow in the states?
One major thing that would really ignite the development in the states
is for the game to be played in the school system. It doesn't require a lot of
equipment to start it up and there isn't much physical contact allowed therefore
it's a pretty safe sport to play for kids of all ages.

How can we get more women to play floorball in the states?
I think it's just a matter of promoting the sport. Most people have
Never even heard of floorball and the number of female hockey players in
the states continues to grow every year so I would certainly think
there'd be a lot of interest within that demographic. It's a great sport in its own right
but it's also a great way to develop hockey skills during the off-season.

What are your personal hopes/goals for the coming WFC?
This is my first WFC so I want to gain valuable international experience playing
against the best women players in the world!

What hopes do you have for the team?
As a team we hope to do well enough to automatically qualify for the
2011 WC.

Which teams do you think will be your toughest opponents?
Honestly, all of our games will be tough but I think the toughest team
Will be Sweden. They took 1st in 2007 and are hosting the tournament this
Year so they'll definitely be a force to be reckoned with.

Which teams do you think will play in the final of the WFC?
I am predicting a Sweden/Switzerland final.

Who do you think will be the most important player for the success of this team?
There are a lot of new players this year and we don't get the luxury to
play/practice together all year so I think it'll be important for the veterans to take
on a leadership role. Ultimately though...floorball is a team game so the success of our team
will be depend
on all of us playing together as a unit, as well as trusting each other
and the system.

What do you think the spectators can expect that come to see the US Women play?
We have a great team this year! Spectators can expect to see a hard
fought game through the final buzzer!

The USFbA thanks Jenna Bluhm for her time and wishes her and the entire team good luck at the World Championships!

The USFA becomes the USFbA!
As you might have noticed the USA Floorball Association acronym has been changing on the website. The work is not yet complete but we feel we should inform everyone why. The simple fact is that the USFA is the US Fencing Associaton.

We where not aware of this and aplogise to the USFA for any inconvinience this might have caused them. We also send thanks for their understanding in this matter.

We will continue the work with changing the acronyms on the website until it is complete. So from now on the USA Floorball Association is know as the USFbA.
