Menlo Park FC wins the Golden Gate Cup after a few very close games leading up to the final.

Menlo Park advanced to the final after a very hard fought battle against Chicago Dogs in the semifinal. They were able to hold off the Chicago Dogs and win 4 – 2 at full time with 2 goals coming from US national Team member Matt Nielsen.

In the final game they faced a strong Team Utah coming off their semifinal win against SoCal where NTFA transplant Jari Voutilainen produced a Hattrick and  finalized the score of 4 – 3.

SoCal faced Team Chicago in the bronze game and Oliver Oftedal had a very strong individual performance with a 2 point game and carried SoCal to their Golden Gate Cup bronze medal. SoCal won 4 -1.

The final game between Utah and Menlo Park was as advertised a very close and tight game with few individual mistakes or penalties. Familiar faces in the score sheet with Matt Nielsen and Jari Voutilainen with one goal each, until Michael Staub scored the game winning goal with 4:57 left of the second period.

This makes it 7 years of straight wins by Menlo Park dominating the Golden Gate Cup for another engraving on the trophy!

It did not start out well for Menlo Park this time, with a 6 – 3 lose to Utah in the first round, but they found their way back to their winning ways and are the reigning Golden Gate Cup Champions once again.
