USA defeated in the first tilt against Iceland

In a historic first national team game on Iceland team USA where defeated by Iceland by 3-7 in the first of two games this weekend.

Team USA came out strong and created a lot of pressure in Iceland’s zone but Iceland where quick on the counter attacks and one man would dominate the first period. Iceland’s Andreas Stefansson was able to secure a hattrick in the first 20 minutes of the game. USA did respond with a goal by Aleksi Huttunen after some pretty passing on the power play, 1-3 after the first.

Iceland’s Any Nilsson made it 1-4 in the beginning of the middle period before team USA surged with goals by Janik Guntert and David Hansen who crashed the net. With only one goal up 3-4, team USA was going all in and it felt like a comeback was on the horizon. But shortly thereafter Stefansson would strike again however making it 3-5 after two.

Iceland would also score the only two goals of the final period despite a valiant effort by Team USA in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Sunday will see a light practice for the team before it is time for another game against Iceland at 15:00 local time.
