This year’s US National Championship was a big success and was played in Birmingham, AL at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) August 28 – August 29, 2021. This is the same arena where Floorball will be played at the The World Games (TWG) in 2022.

This event itself had been planned for a several years now and we are excited that it was possible to play, even with a pandemic going on. Although several teams were not able to attend due to the current COVID-19 situation, there were still a lot of familiar teams and faces.

USA Floorball continued its tradition of supporting talented players with a development camp to further their skills. The camp was held Friday afternoon and was very well received by the participants. It was lead by the Orlando Vikings team that drew from their experience throughout the years teaching and coaching Floorball in Orlando, and at international events, to create challenging drills.

This years Nationals introduced a new version of Floorball to the U.S. players. 3v3 Street Floorball is very popular in Europe and is traditionally played outdoors. Due to the possibility of inclement weather it was decided to bring it indoors this time. The tournament was played with U16 players from across the country. Colorado, Orlando Vikings and Texas brought experienced players from this years Youth Nationals in Utah. Texas grabbed bronze and Orlando, with their dynamic duo Luke Williamsson and Ryan Folic, won gold. It was a new comer however that managed to grab the silver medal. After being undefeated on Saturday, Music City Floorball Team 1 from Nashville took it all the way to the final on Sunday where they were defeated by Orlando.

Several of the players for this years 3v3 Youth Tournament doubled in the U19 team playing for the first time against the top adult  competition in the country. Even though they did not manage to pull off a win, they held their own and impressed many people. The future for U.S. Floorball is looking good and we expect to see a lot of these youth as we continue to develop the U19 team.

Birmingham entered it’s first ever competitive team this year, the River Region FC in the B-division, and they showed that they will be a team to watch out for in the future. They started the tournament by winning their first 2 first games before losing to 2021 champions, Menlo Park FC in the first round of the playoffs.

There were many familiar teams in the top heading into the playoffs with Menlo Park, NTFA, Chicago and Utah leading the pack.

Case Connor from Chicago scored the only goal for Chicago Dogs in the semifinal against Utah, winning 1-0 and securing their ticket to the US National 2021 Championship game.

In the other semifinal we had a rematch of 2019 US National Championship game with NTFA taking on Menlo Park FC. Menlo Park looked to be the stronger team and got revenge for the loss of the final game in 2019, and won a very tight and hard fought semifinal with the score 3-2.

The final game was set up between Chicago Dogs and Menlo Park. They had already played each other in the group-play with Menlo Park winning a fairly easy game 5 – 0. This final game was going to be very different with Chicago taking the charge in the first period from a goal by Jakub Zajac, scoring the first goal of the game putting Chicago in the lead, 1-0. This did not seem to rattle or shake Menlo Park’s confidence at all as they clawed their way back in the game and equalized the score with a goal by Matt Nielsen, right before the first intermission. A very even and tight game followed and it was not until 3 minutes remaining of full time when Menlo Park was able to get the game winning goal scored by Tore Kvaslerud, and assisted by long time Menlo Park faithful Andreas Sievert.

This is the 5th time Menlo Park FC has captured US National Floorball championship title.

This event was a big part of the preparations for the TWG2022 and the #roadtoBHM, and proved to be an important and exciting event for the future home of Floorball at Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC).

Several local TV and newspapers came out and were interviewing players and staff. USA Floorball has left a mark of our beautiful sport in Birmingham, AL.

We are very excited for the upcoming TWG2022 next year with Floorball on the calendar. This was the first time since COVID restrictions that the adult teams in the US have competed in a USA Floorball sanctioned tournament and it was a very appreciated and anticipated welcome back to the US Floorball community.

Next stop for the US Floorball community will be in San Jose, CA and Golden Gate Cup November, 12 -14. We hope to see everyone there.
