After defeating Canada in two consecutive games in Markham the U.S. Women’s team is set to participate at the World Floorball Championships in Tampere, Finland in December.

The U.S and Canadian team gathered in Markham, Canada, this past weekend to face off for a spot at the World Floorball Championships. The Cornell Community Center was once again host to a WFC qualifier.

The first game was played on Friday the 6th of February and with just over 150 spectators on the stand the stage was set for another great North American floorball battle. But the initial battle would prove to be lopsided. But it wasn’t until 13:04 of the first period that the first goal came. Denise Henry found Heidi Williams for a 1-0 U.S. lead. The same duo, but with exchanged roles, made it 2-0 five minutes into the second period.

The Canadians needed a goal at this point but now it was time for Marie Haggstrom to step into the picture. First she scored a penalty shot goal and then followed that up with three more goals giving Team USA a demanding 5-0 lead a couple minutes into the third. Erica Camp then capped off the U.S. scoring by making it 6-0 after 6:53. The Canadians would score two in the end giving the US a 6-2 win in the initial game of the World Floorball Championship qualifier.

The second game was on Sunday and the Canadians came out strong, taking the lead through Theresa Woodland after less than three minutes of the game. But three minutes was what it took for Team USA to get back into it. Tiffany Gerber made it one all on the power play after 6:07. Halfway into the period Gerber struck again giving the US the lead, 2-1 after the first. The second period scoring was all USA. Marie Haggstrom scored twice, making it a solid 4-1 after two periods.

With just over ten minutes to go of the game the Canadians came back into it when Woodland scored again, 4-2. But the next goal would be from the U.S. team as Natascha Hansen score on the power play making it 5-2 after 14:44 of the last period. Canada would be the last to score in the game as Sonja Hotke made it 5-2 with minutes left but that was of little consequence as Team USA win their second straight game and are set for the World Floorball Championships in Finland.
