The 2014 California Cup was played Saturday May 10 in Fresno, California. Five California teams competed for the Cup.
After all teams had completed the Play-Off qualification round, playing each team once, San Francisco came out on top as the #1 Seed followed by Stanford, Hand of Doom, Menlo Park and Fresno.
Four teams qualified for the play-off round. The first semifinal game was between Stanford and Hand of Doom. The game was tie after the first period 1-1. Finally towards the end of the second period Stanford scored 3 goals to win 4-1 to secure a spot in the Championship Game.
In the second semifinal game, #1 seed San Francisco against the defending 2013 California Cup Champions Menlo Park. After the first period, San Francisco was winning 1-0, but in the second period Menlo Park scored 3 unanswered goals to win 3-1 to secure the final spot in the Championship Game.
The Championship game started as expected with both teams going at each other in a tight floorball match. After the 1st period, the game was tied 1-1. Both teams pushed hard in the second period, but defended even better, offering few scoring chances at both ends with both teams scoring 1 goal each. At the end of the 2nd period, the game was still tied at 2-2 and we will need 5 more minutes in sudden death (golden goal) play to see who will be the 2014 California Cup Champion.
After 5 minutes of great opportunities of scoring from both teams, the game is still tied 2-2. A three man shoot-out will decide who will be the Champion. Both goaltenders play well stopping the first two shooters, but Stanford scored on their third attempt to win.
Congratulations to Stanford for winning the 11th Annual California Cap Tournament.
Finally I want to thank all teams, players, referees and volunteers for making 2014 California Cup a success.
