Menlo Park Take Home the Golden Gate Cup!

Menlo Park Take Home the Golden Gate Cup!

Adam Troy

One of the premier Floorball tournaments in the US was played this past weekend, and it was as usual a very competitive and close final that determined the winner, Menlo Park FC.

Menlo Park demonstrated earlier in the year that they are a force to be reckoned with by winning the US National championship in Texas. Now, after vying for it every year since the start of Golden Gate Cup in 2010, this year they clenched the top spot! Menlo Park only gave up only two goals, scored by San Francisco, during the entire tournament. Clearly, this is still a very strong team.

Menlo Park and San Francisco both dominated the group stage with impressive victories, and it soon became obvious that this was going to be a Bay Area championship battle.

The only team outside of California to participate was Colorado, who played well and placed 4th. Colorado had a very skilled team, but lost in the end 1-3 to a hard working San Jose team. San Jose, with several street hockey players, showed a lot of Floorball progress. Gobinder Kamboj scored two impressive goals in the game for 3rd place, leading the way for San Jose to win. Other noticeable plays came from Kijan Balakrishna who showed great individual progress during the tournament, earning him the Most Inspirational Player Award.

The final score for the GGC Championship was 4-1 in favor of Menlo Park, but the score does not reflect the very close and intense game that determined the Golden Gate Cup 2015 championship. Appropriately, the MVP player who scored the most goals in the tournament, Andreas Sievert made the game winning goal at 3:10 in the second period. The score stood at 2-1 with three minutes left on the clock when veteran player Henrik Eriksson scored making it 3-1 for Menlo Park in what became a controversial goal. San Francisco's captain, Klas Berghede received a misconduct penalty in conjunction with this goal, but Menlo Park finalized the score, 4-1, in an open net after San Francisco pulled the goalie in a last attempt to even up the score.
